The old mansion at the end of Maple Lane had been abandoned for over thirty years. Its broken windows, cracked walls, and overgrown garden frightened everyone in the neighborhood. At night, people claimed they could hear slow, heavy breathing coming from inside, even though no one lived there.
One evening, Emily and her brother Jake decided to uncover the truth. Armed with flashlights, they stepped into the dusty house just before midnight.
The air was cold and strangely still. Every room was covered in cobwebs, and the silence was overwhelming. Then they heard it.
Breath... inhale... breath... exhale.
The sound echoed through the empty hallway as if something enormous was sleeping nearby.
Following the noise, they climbed to the attic. The breathing grew louder with every step. When Jake pushed the attic door open, they found only an old rocking chair moving gently by itself.
Suddenly, the breathing stopped.
For a few terrifying seconds, everything was silent.
Then they felt warm breath on the backs of their necks.
They slowly turned around... but there was nobody there.
Their flashlights went out, and a deep whisper filled the darkness.
"You finally heard me."
