It was nearly midnight when I was driving home through a deserted forest road. There were no streetlights, no houses, and not a single vehicle in sight.
Suddenly, my headlights revealed a small wooden box lying in the middle of the road.
I stopped.
The box looked old and badly scratched. Curious, I got out and picked it up. There was a strange symbol carved on its lid.
Before I could open it, I heard someone whisper my name.
I turned around.
Nobody was there.
I quickly returned to my car and placed the box on the passenger seat. As I started driving, I heard knocking from inside it.
Knock… knock… knock…
My hands began trembling.
Then the box slowly opened by itself.
Inside was an old photograph.
It showed me standing beside my car.
I stared at it in horror.
The photograph was taken from behind my vehicle—but the picture showed something standing behind me.
A tall, shadowy figure.
I slammed the brakes and looked into the rearview mirror.
The road was empty.
Then I heard a whisper directly behind my ear.
“You shouldn't have picked me up.”
My car suddenly stopped.
When I looked at the passenger seat, the box was gone.
But the photograph was still there.
Now, the shadow in the picture was standing much closer to me.
